Having contributed to the cultural narrative of the Gwendraeth Valley and the broader representation of Welsh identity for the past forty years, artist Peter Finnemore embarks on a new journey through India in this exciting and beautifully designed photobook, which wonderfully captures the intricacies of a dynamic culture.

Looking For Signs is an evocative exploration of India through the lens of a handheld camera, capturing the fluidity of social spaces and personal experiences in a fragmented and existential narrative. This collection of subjective photographs reflects a pilgrim’s journey rather than a tourist’s, revealing the complex, dynamic contrasts of Indian culture. The work intertwines social encounters with a rich tapestry of local art and traditions while also acknowledging the outsider’s perspective. It serves as a meditation on the photographic medium’s role in collective memory and storytelling, highlighting its materiality and evolution. Ultimately, this book unfolds as a collage of pictorial narratives, navigating the interconnectedness of perception and reality, the momentary and the infinite, in the quest for meaning within the vibrant spectrum of human experience.

“In Looking for Signs, Peter Finnemore plays with visual symbols drawing connections between time and place. Through the subjective eye of the artist, we are carried on a poetic journey exploring and questioning the possibilities and traditions of the photographic medium. The book serves as a reflection on the presence of the photographic image in culture, its relationship with the sacred and documenting ephemeral experiences.”

Siân Addicott.  Director of FFotogallery.

“The book revisits ancient and modern symbols through the camera of Peter. The visuals are diverse and some take us back to the ancient cave paintings while some remind us of the latest photo jargon. It is a beautiful narrative by a photographer from across the sea.”

Dr Tabeenah Anjum. Haridev Joshi State University of Journalism and Mass Communication, Jaipur
